Nittel

In the area

There are plenty of other places to visit in the area if you have time and inclination. If you need more details about something specific then ask us.

Mannebach

Nittel to Mannebach - 8km
Leaving Nittel and heading away from the river you come to Mannebach after 8km. This makes a good day out walking - it's quite hilly but perfectly manageable and you end up at the local brewery. The beer is very refreshing...

There is also a Käserei in Mannebach if you fancy some unpasteurised cheese...

Saarburg

Nittel to Saarburg - 14km
Saarburg is another 6km on past Mannebach. It's a small town with a very old fort and a stunning waterfall. It's easy to spend a few hours here walking and looking around.

Saarburg

The Luxembourgish Mosel

On the other side of the river in Luxembourg are lots of small villages that are nice to wander through. If you head away from Grevenmacher (home of Bernard Massard and a buttefly garden) towards France then you'll come across them every couple of kilometers. There are no specific things to see but the local atmosphere is good.

Almost every village is involved in wine-making so if you're interested then stop at the vintners. The wine tends to be more drier but with as much or more fruit (certainly this goes for the Rieslings). Those we have tried in Ahn and Machtum have been good and if you do want to do this then it's worth stopping in at Cep D'Or in Stadtbredimus, one of our favourite vineyards (both for the wine and the architecture). Check out the Rieslings here.

If you want to eat out and stay reasonably local (without staying in Nittel) there is a very good restaurant in Ahn called Mathes. They have French style cuisine for around €60 per head (including wine).

If you carry on you hit Remich which has broad boardwalks and is generally bustling on the weekends. Plenty of good places to eat here if you are passing at lunch or dinner.

On The River

Boat trips go in both directions down the Mosel. A recommended trip is from Trier to Bernkastel-Kues.

Have a look at the Princess Marie Astrid for details.

Bernkastel-Kues

Nittel to Bernkastel - 70km
If you don't fancy the boat to Bernkastel you can drive. The route takes you down the Mosel river valley past Piesporter. Don't take the autobahn - you'll miss some lovely scenery.

Bernkastel itself is very scenic with a great market square and old timbered houses (or so I'm told - I still haven't made it there ;-). You can spend at least an afternoon wandering around.

Montenach

Nittel to Montenach - 30km
If you drive to France from Nittel one of the first villages you hit is Montenach. It's a little place, but is notable for two reasons.

  1. It has a nature reserve where many species of wild orchid grow
  2. Auberge de la Klaus is nearby (it's a duck and goose farm with restaurant attached...)

If you like the idea of a walk before a foie gras feast then book here +33 (0)3 82 83 72 38.

Metz

Nittel to Metz - 100km
The city of Metz is further into France. It is a larger city with an imposing cathedral and a large-ish shopping district.
